Skills Like S.C.U.D.

I came across these SKILLS on DIGG this morning. Seems legit. They says these disciplines transcend all walks of life, positions, etc. Oh yeah...this comic RULES!

http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/archives/664

1. Public Speaking
The ability to speak clearly, persuasively, and forcefully in front of an audience – whether an audience of 1 or of thousands – is one of the most important skills anyone can develop. People who are effective speakers come across as more comfortable with themselves, more confident, and more attractive to be around. Being able to speak effectively means you can sell anything – products, of course, but also ideas, ideologies, worldviews. And yourself – which means more opportunities for career advancement, bigger clients, or business funding.

2. Writing
Writing well offers many of the same advantages that speaking well offers: good writers are better at selling products, ideas, and themselves than poor writers. Learning to write well involves not just mastery of grammar but the development of the ability to organize one’s thoughts into a coherent form and target it to an audience in the most effective way possible. Given the huge amount of text generated by almost every transaction – from court briefs and legislation running into the thousands of pages to those foot-long receipts you get when you buy gum these days – a person who is a master of the written word can expect doors to open in just about every field.

3. Self-Management
If success depends of effective action, effective action depends on the ability to focus your attention where it is needed most, when it is needed most. Strong organizational skills, effective productivity habits, and a strong sense of discipline are needed to keep yourself on track.

4. Networking
Networking is not only for finding jobs or clients. In an economy dominated by ideas and innovation, networking creates the channel through which ideas flow and in which new ideas are created. A large network, carefully cultivated, ties one into not just a body of people but a body of relationships, and those relationships are more than just the sum of their parts. The interactions those relationships make possible give rise to innovation and creativity – and provide the support to nurture new ideas until they can be realized.

5. Critical Thinking
We are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands, of times more information on a daily basis than our great-grandparents were. Being able to evaluate that information, sort the potentially valuable from the trivial, analyze its relevance and meaning, and relate it to other information is crucial – and woefully under-taught. Good critical thinking skills immediately distinguish you from the mass of people these days.

6. Decision-Making
The bridge that leads from analysis to action is effective decision making – knowing what to do based on the information available. While not being critical can be dangerous, so too can over-analyzing, or waiting for more information before making a decision. Being able to take in the scene and respond quickly and effectively is what separates the doers from the wannabes.

7. Math
You don’t have to be able to integrate polynomials to be successful. However, the ability to quickly work with figures in your head, to make rough but fairly accurate estimates, and to understand things like compound interest and basic statistics gives you a big lead on most people. All of these skills will help you to analyze data more effectively – and more quickly – and to make better decisions based on it.

8. Research
Nobody can be expected to know everything, or even a tiny fraction of everything. Even within your field, chances are there’s far more that you don’t know than you do know. You don’t have to know everything – but you should be able to quickly and painlessly find out what you need to know. That means learning to use the Internet effectively, learning to use a library, learning to read productively, and learning how to leverage your network of contacts – and what kinds of research are going to work best in any given situation.

9. Relaxation
Stress will not only kill you, it leads to poor decision-making, poor thinking, and poor socialization. So be failing to relax, you knock out at least three of the skills in this list – and really more. Plus, working yourself to death in order to keep up, and not having any time to enjoy the fruits of your work, isn’t really “success”. It’s obsession. Being able to face even the most pressing crises with your wits about you and in the most productive way is possibly the most important thing on this list.

10. Basic Accounting
It is a simple fact in our society that money is necessary. Even the simple pleasures in life, like hugging your child, ultimately need money – or you’re not going to survive to hug for very long. Knowing how to track and record your expenses and income is important just to survive, let alone to thrive. But more than that, the principles of accounting apply more widely to things like tracking the time you spend on a project or determining whether the value of an action outweighs the costs in money, time, and effort. It’s a shame that basic accounting isn’t a required part of the core K-12 curriculum.

The Fastest..

...to 300 million!

What do you think of "The Clone Wars" that comes out on August 15th?
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809991325/video/8977211
I hope the script is thick. If you could do a Star Wars story? What would be your take on it? I have an idea, should I post it?

What did you dream about last night...

1. Being chased. Candice Janco, author of the Bedside Dream Dictionary: 500 Dream Symbols and Their Meanings, describes this dream (the most common) as an indication of a felt threat in your waking life. This threat can take the form of a menacing person or a strong emotion with which you are having difficulty coping. Try to determine who or what is chasing you, where the dream takes place, and what your feelings are during the chase to understand what this dreams means to you.

2. Missing an important event because you are late. This can indicate regret over a missed opportunity, inability to make a connection, or desire to pull oneself together. In Dream Power: How to Use Your Night Dreams to Change Your Life, Cynthia Richmond suggests asking questions of dreams in order to understand what this common symbol means to you. For example: What are you missing? Who is disappointed by the missed event? Is it only you or are there others involved?

3. Finding yourself at work or school naked. Not surprisingly, Freud interpreted dreams about being naked as repressed sexual wishes. But the most important part of this dream is the feelings that are involved. You suddenly find yourself exposed, vulnerable, and awkward. What area of your life corresponds to that feeling? Figure this out by noting where you are, who notices you, what part of you is exposed, how people react to you, and how you yourself react to the situation.

4. Falling. Falling indicates feelings of insecurity and lack of support. What situation have you “fallen into?” Who has “let you down?” Perhaps not surprisingly, this particular dream is most common among professional men and women. The Illustrated Dream Dictionary authors Russell Grant and Vicky Emptage note the close relationship between “falling” and “failing.” They also note that the dream’s meaning is probably not so clear-cut. Grant and Emptage ascribe dreams of falling to feelings of isolation, the sense of being without the support and affection that success cannot provide.

5. Flying. Interestingly, Grant and Emptage interpret flying dreams as boasting about sexual powers. The important part of the dream is how you are flying; since the flying itself represents your ambitions, are you flying successfully, or trying and failing to fly as high as possible? From there, they make the leap to feelings of sexual inadequacy, but such feelings of low self-esteem could cover inadequacy of any kind, not just sexual.

6. Losing your teeth. This theme has a number of potential meanings because of the very different significances teeth have to different people. Our teeth are representative of our appearance because our smiles are one of the first things people notice about us. Therefore, dreaming about losing your teeth can indicate insecurity about your appearance, or even fears of sexual impotence, as teeth are often used to flirt with a desired partner. We also use our teeth to bite, chew, and tear, so losing them can mean a loss of power or fear of getting old. Interestingly, this dream is most common among menopausal women, perhaps for all of the above reasons.

7. Snakes. Snakes have been a fear in dreams for quite some time. The ancient Egyptians used to make snakes out of clay and place them at the doors of their homes to frighten away nightmares, believing that snakes were bringers of bad dreams and that the clay snake would keep real ones away. Dreammoods, an online encyclopedia of dream meanings, reports that snakes signify some hidden threat. This makes sense, as most of us fear the “snake in the grass.” Like most other symbols, though, this one has many meanings that depend on context. Snakes shed their skin, so they may signify renewal and transformation. This may be a frightening experience, as most people are uncomfortable with change, or it may be very positive.

In all of our dreams, the true meanings emerge when we decide what they really mean to us. Though these dream symbols are shared among many, and we can determine general explanations for them, it is the context in which we place them that is significant. Read all you can about dream meanings to find information that may be relevant to you, but also ask questions about your dreams and how these symbols make you feel. Once you dig a little deeper, you may find answers and clarity.

Insight

You experience sudden insights, make discoveries, come up with fresh solutions to old problems, and seek alternatives to the usual routine way of doing things. Your mental processes are speeded up and you move more quickly now. Try to make room for a lot of spontaneity and flexibility in your schedule at this time.

I spoke to my stepmother this afternoon. Diane is still very sad. She says she wakes up in the morning crying. There are good and bad days. I wish we lived closer so I could stop by and help her.

Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.~Author Unknown

More Dark Knight & Game Theory?

I pulled these of the net this morning. They are BOTH great reads and shows us that the Nolan’s craft their movies with care and intelligence. As far as the Dark Knight goes, I really like the part that suggests during the “ferry test” that…“There is probably some horrible twist that the Joker had in mind that would subvert them. Maybe each detonator was actually for their own boat“. WOA?, that didn’t even cross my mind. That’s some ILL ISHT and in this film the Joker seemed to be two steps ahead of everyone so this is completely possible. For the next movie, I thought a good choice for the villain would be the Riddler but treat him more like a zodiac killer-cipher making type of character but this guy NAILED it…“However, I think this calls for a new villain in the third movie of the trilogy: The Game Theorist. Much like the Riddler, but deadlier and requiring Batman to use mathematics to fight crime.”

The Dark Knight

Duality. A dual state of quality. Think…good and evil. As Gordon told Batman at the end of “Begins”…Escalation is happening. I saw “The Dark Knight” this past Friday and just like you (yes YOU!) I was blown away. The best “comic” book story to date? Time will tell. I know this much, I felt like I was 12 years old again watching “The Empire Strikes Back”. And that is the highest compliment I can give this film and this is why even after one viewing it is possible in my three favorite movies of all time. Definitely the top five.

What was good…

The Villains.
I love it how the Joker is given NO back story or origin whatsoever. Here he is in all his anarchist brilliance. He is the devil incarnate. Dropped into the heart of Gotham and ripping it to shreds. Heath Ledger has changed the movie villain forever. All this Oscar talk is no bullshit, he was amazing. The pencil scene was a hoot. The portrait of evil has been changed forever. “Would you like to know how I got my scars”?

Gone are the neon loud suits, the cackling laugh and the way Tommy Lee Jones (who I really like as an actor) desecrated the character of Harvey Dent aka Two Face. Eckhart plays the role magnificently. Dent starts out as a crusader for justice as Gotham City's new district attorney. A series of events turn him into an advocate of injustice whose flip of a coin can mean the difference between life and death (you should know this but in case you didn‘t). Dent doesn’t overplay the character and is spot on. His face and his psyche was a nightmare.

Also, the returning cast seemed to hit their stride in this one. Bale is the best Wayne/Batman of all time. Cane IS the best Alfred. Freeman makes Fox and Oldman IS James Gordon (Nice twist in this movie, I won‘t spoil it). The characters again are brought to life.

Gyllenhaal did what she could with the “Rachel Dawes” role. No worries here…

Little touches…

-Seeing Cillian Murphy as The Scarecrow again was DOPE! Even if it was brief.
-Hearing Batman’s cape rustling as he flew around the skyscrapers in Hong Kong gave me goose bumps.
-Gotham City as a living, breathing doppelganger.

What was bad (minimal)…

The Batman voice…
It’s still growing on me but I have come to this conclusion. It's deliberate. The voice serves to hide his identity and to further create an image which is something so integral to the character. Batman's voice is a symbol of his complete transformation from Bruce Wayne into an alien ego, something completely other. Not only does it serve the practical purpose of disguising Wayne's voice, but it resonates with rage and horror...i.e. no one talks like that...and it works to terrify criminals and separate him from normal people.

The “Mapping”…
The cell phone/sonar mapping was a cool idea, but the way they expanded it later on the movie looked bad. It looked flimsy and haphazard, with no explanation for how batman developed it (to Luscious Fox's surprise) etc. It looked like some crappy XMEN 3 effects.

The movie felt like it ran a little long however it did need to resolve the story of Harvey Dent, which I dare say is the main story line here. Harvey is the bright hope of Gotham which was so completely thwarted and twisted by chaos and evil. Gotham's criminal underworld had already pushed Harvey Dent, and the Joker was the tipping point, the catalyst, that sent Harvey, and by metaphor, the entire city into a schizophrenic tailspin. The idea Batman sacrificed himself to protect Harvey Dent's memory, and in essence the last vestiges of Gotham's soul, was powerful and needed the time and space they gave the story to resolve.

A genuine masterpiece and as good as it gets…

Bad Music

So, I picked up the Nas yesterday…Eh, maybe it will grow on me. I’m pretty finicky lately as to what music I’m feeling. 2008 has been lackluster as far as hip hop goes. Maybe I’m listening to the wrong genre? Maybe I’m just old? Maybe there is to much saturation? I can’t put my finger on it.

Some thoughts…

I guess the reason I do music is…a) I like to listen to the sound of my voice b) It’s creative and helps with stress, tension c) It’s fun and you get to be involved with like minded artists and shows get rocked d) It’s like my alter ego aka secret identity aka I feel like a super hero or super villain and…e) freedom of speech is king!

Now, while Freedom Of Speech is king some people so just NOT do music. Examples…

Orin Hatch: PLEASE stop. I get it, you are friends with Kennedy. It’s touching that you wrote “Headed Home”. Cancer sucks, I know. You just need to stop…PLEASE. Side note…he has written hundreds of songs on patriotic themes…with such titles as "Freedom's Light" and "I Love Old Glory". I would have ghostwritten some tunes for Ashdown if he would have asked. One possible title for a Pete Ashdown song could have been “Orin Hatch Sucks At Music”.

Mike Meehan: You are probably asking who the EFF is Mike Meehan. I saw this jokers billboard on the Daily Show last night (see attached pic). Check out …”The Republican Song”. Is this guy from Utah as well? I was surprised to find out he isn’t. Peep the lyrics…
http://www.therepublicansong.com/

And the video?
http://www.therepublicansong.com/watch.html

Word’s escape me, WOW. Stating if a Democrat wins in November we will be attacked by terrorist's? WHAT??? This has to be joke. It’s not…and this guy SUCKS as bad as cancer.

On a positive note, I present…One Day As A Lion.

Sunshine

Hell is full of layers. Sometimes people visit funerals to see what types of parting gifts they will get. The playground feels a lot different when there is sunshine. I try to measure it by what I can give. You didn’t need anything, never did.

Cherry On Top

You will be able to convince others very easily. No body will able to harm you. Your opponents would be defeated by you at so many occasions. You will be quite happy during this week. Relationship with your parents and other family members Fruitful journeys may also take place.

Saint Mark in St Paul

You experience a burst of energy and are more vigorous, bold, assertive, and impatient at this time. You feel ambitious and capable of doing a lot and meeting challenges successfully. However, if your will is blocked, you become quite angry now. You are less willing to accommodate others and meet people half way. Your ego-drive and competitiveness are very strong.

Dirty Chai

I am sitting at the Caribou Coffee in Burnsville, MN. I am enjoying a dirty chai with K. We are attempting to get work stuff done with the use of the FREE Wi-Fi. My fathers funeral service went as well as can be expected. I prepared a mini-eulogy for it (see prev post). I actually freestyled it a bit but tried to stay with mostly what I had written. It was easily the hardest speech/performance/spoken word that I have ever done in my life. I had to do it. If I would have passed I would be feeling a HUGE load of regret right now but instead I feel complete. I sobbed, cried and laughed my way through it. It's nice to have closure on something as difficult as this. Hard times, brighter days will come.

Peace-DAG!
PS. Saw "Hancock" with K last night. 2.5 out of 5. Eh, I might write more on this but who knows.

Always Have, Always Will...

Is it hard to believe that our relationship does not end at death but reaches its perfection. This is the hope that carries my spirits. These next days, weeks, months, and years will prove my hope to be true. For my relationship with my father will grow more intimate in my reflection and recollection. Indeed, I have already come to experience a better understanding and appreciation of my dad.
I hope that we can go on living as he did. I hope that we not regret what might have been and live in the present with great hope for the future.

In retrospect, life seems like a sublime dream. I now dream about what it will be like when we're all together again. Everyone we've ever loved will be there, too. And we'll celebrate and laugh and tell stories and never again have to number our days. Amen.

I love you dad. Always have. Always will.
